Fővárosi Vízművek Zrt (Budapest Waterworks)

The biggest Hungarian water supply company, Budapest Waterworks which was founded in 1868, provides two million people with continuous supply of healthy potable water.

The Company has made immense progress during the past more than a hundred years. The early plants that used to be operated by steam engines have been replaced by modern, automated facilities meeting the most exacting requirements of hygiene. The Company’s pipeline network has reached more than 5,000 km in length, covering the whole of the territory of the capital city. The Company’s water treatment, network operation and water quality testing activities are enabled by cutting edge technologies.

At present there are more than seven hundred potable water production wells on Szentendre Island, Csepel Island, Margit Island and along both banks of the Danube, of a total daily capacity of up to nearly a million cubic meters of potable water for the consumers in Budapest.

One of the most important projects in this decade in the life of the Waterworks of Budapest was the 3,000 m3 water tower constructed on the Nagytétény plateau enabling safe and reliable potable water supply for as many as 18,000 consumers in Budafok since early 2008.

The Waterworks of Budapest’s Long term development plan contains a description of the reconstruction and development tasks to be carried out in the medium and in the long run, along with the required resources. The direction of developments is always determined by consumers’ demand for water. These are the primary factors underlying the planning and scheduling of the necessary reservoir, pump house capacity and pipeline network development projects.

The most important tasks beyond development and reconstruction are protecting and securing our water resources.

The Waterworks of Budapest contributes to the operation of the Hungarian Water Business Cluster with the following activities.
